Budapest (136 km)

Budapest is the capital of Hungary and has around 2 million inhabitants. It is situated on both sides of the Danube and is a combination of Buda on one side of the river, and Pest on the other. It is a city known for its tradition. The well-known coffee rooms are reinstated and renovated. You can experience life how an intellect or an artist had back in the days. Budapest also has hundreds of hot springs in tens of bathhouses. Buda covers the hilly right shore of the Danube, two hills dominate: the Castle Hill and the Gellert mountain. The main monuments of the Buda-side are to be found on the Castle Hill:
  • The castle and the castle hill (Várhegy)
  • De Matthias church (Mátyástemplom)
  • Fishermans Bastion (Halászbástya)
  • The Tancsics ihaly Utca (street)
The hill is surrounded by a wall: The 18th century castle district is well preserved within the wall (mainly the southern part suffered heavily from the war). The beauty of the view over the Danube with it bridges and Pest is sung about in many songs. The major tourist attractions, like most in Budapest, are less old than they seem: both Matthias Church in its present form as the Fisherman’s Bastion are built in the 19th century. Things to do in Pest:
  • The shores of the Danube
  • The Parliament building (Andrassy Ut), the Budapest boulevard
  • Heroes square (hosok Tere) on the end of the boulevard, with its millennium Monument
  • The Varosliget (city park)
